Introduction to top level domain name guessing game
Scott Tolinski
Welcome to Syntax ESLint this Monday. Hasty treat. We're gonna be playing the top level domain game where we it's been a while since we've done this. So if you you haven't heard a top level domain game episode, what we do, basically, is we pick a top level domain from a list and the other person needs to guess it. We'll give you a a better rundown of the rules right before we start, but let's get into it. My name is Scott Tolinski. I'm a developer from Denver, Colorado. And with me, as always, is
Wes Bos
Wes Bos. Hey, everybody.
Scott Tolinski
Hey, Wes. It's, been a hectic morning for both of us. So this one is guaranteed to be a mess, and I'm excited about that. But you know what won't be a mess JS your Wes site because you have a, one of our sponsors, which is LogRocket. And LogRocket is going to be the service that allows you to visually see that mess so you can fix it. Now what is LogRocket? Well, it is a visual tool that gives you a scrubbable time line of anytime an error or an exception happened on your website, allowing you to have a pixel perfect replay.
Scott Tolinski
Trying to investigate some of these problems sometimes JS you become an investigator, but you Sanity see the problem. How do you how do you fix this? Well, this actually allows you to see the problem and see it happening in real time with the network request activity with the console login errors. No more emailing your clients saying, hey. Can you, tell me what you did when you clicked on this thing and what browser were you using? You'll get all of that with LogRockets. So head on over to logrocket.comforward/syntax, sign up, and you will get 14 days for free.
Scott Tolinski
Alright. Thank you. Log Rocket. Now if only Log Rocket could have saved me from the last time we played the TLD game, I really got worked. I think I had a bit of a comeback, but I think I ultimately lost out to to the Wes. Wes, the the I'm trying to come up with a cool nickname for you, but I guess it's just Wes Bare. The domain Node master.
Explanation of game rules and scoring
Wes Bos
Yeah. Let's talk about how the points are. So we're gonna pick a t l d. A t l d is top level domain. Like, that means Scott or whatever. And Scott has 4, I have 4, and the the other person has to Wes, is it for a country, or is it, like, a business or marketing domain name? So we'll pick 1 that we we've did before. Scott a f. Is that for a country, or is that for a a business that that can register that? The second 1 is what type of country business is it for? So you have to guess the country, or you have to guess what Scott of, like, what it's targeted at.
Wes Bos
The third thing is how much per year does it cost to register? And you may also say unregisterable because there are some domain names out there that have been claimed by companies that cannot be registered by you. Like, we just talked about this earlier. There's a Scott Node Depot and a dot T. J. Maxx, and you can't just go register those. Those Yarn those are saved by the companies.
Wes Bos
And then finally, the last 1 JS, is Scott dot whatever and Scott there in West Scott whatever available? So, we're going to give you points for each of those.
Wes Bos
Whoever wins, wins.
Wes Bos
Cool. So do you want a rock, paper, scissors for the first one? Whoever wins goes 1st. Okay. Do you do rock, paper, scissors, throw?
Scott Tolinski
Rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Although throw is way more Canadian. Of course, we do would say shoot in America here. Of course. Yeah.
Wes Bos
Rock Tuck, paper, scissors,
Scott Tolinski
Throw.
First round begins
Wes Bos
Okay. He cut I go 1st. Paper. Yeah. Alright. My first domain that you have to guess is dot Wes d.
Wes Bos
Is that a country or a business?
Scott Tolinski
Dot s d.
Scott Tolinski
It is a country.
Wes Bos
Correct.
Scott Tolinski
What country or business is Wes El Salvador.
Wes Bos
No. It is Sudan.
Wes Bos
Wes is for Sudan, and I Node. Wes CSS is for South Sudan. I just learned. I'm at 0 points now. Next one, how much does it cost to register a domain name? So I just typed in Scott.
Wes Bos
So you have to tell me how much does it cost per year. Do we have to search for Scott dot Wes to determine that? Or Yeah. That that's what I'm basing it off of. Should we just always use Scott?
Scott Tolinski
Yeah. Yeah. Keystone here.
Scott Tolinski
I'm gonna say it's 49
Wes Bos
Incorrect.
Wes Bos
It is 100 and $75. Oh, come on. So you are that's 175 minus 49. You're at negative 126
Scott Tolinski
points. Man, this point thing really gets me. Alright. Is Scott available? I'm gonna say no.
Scott Tolinski
It is available.
Scott Tolinski
What? Alright. Mine is 10. Man, I'm getting worked already. Alright. I will say Wes is also available.
Wes Bos
Oh, good.
Wes Bos
It is available.
Scott Tolinski
Yay. I finally did not lose points. So I I come out at the end of that round.
Scott Tolinski
Fantastic round for me. I come out at, negative Wes, so that's great.
Round 1 ends, Wes in the lead
Scott Tolinski
Love it.
Wes Bos
Alright. Hit me with what you got. Okay. So my first one for you,
Scott Tolinski
this one's good, dot0ng.
Round 2 begins
Wes Bos
Oh, o n g?
Scott Tolinski
Yep.
Wes Bos
I'm gonna say business.
Scott Tolinski
It is business, so you get plus 5.
Wes Bos
So what type of business is it for? I am going to say it is a unregisterable I'm so I'm I'm going ahead here, but I'm gonna say the type of business is some some sort of, like, something something group, and this is gonna be some sort of business that is unregisterable.
Wes Bos
So I'm gonna say, what type is business support? It's for a large corporation.
Scott Tolinski
It's for a large corporation.
Scott Tolinski
No. You're wrong.
Scott Tolinski
If it says private registration, does that mean it's unregisterable?
Wes Bos
I think so. Yes.
Wes Bos
Mhmm. Because it does have a price. I shouldn't have said this before. Oh, it does have a price? Okay. Hold on. Yeah. Then maybe not. Wes, like, just try to go ahead and and get it. So hold on. I let's let's go back to the 2nd quarter. It's available. Wes. Okay. Okay.
Wes Bos
What type of corporation is it for? It is for a nongovernment
Scott Tolinski
organization.
Wes Bos
Woah.
Wes Bos
Really? O n g. What does that mean? Operation nongovernment? Organization nongovernment.
Wes Bos
Maybe. Yeah. That seems Kinda like a ORG. But Yeah. Interesting. Never heard of that one. How much does it cost to register per year? I'm gonna say $19.
Scott Tolinski
$19 runies. It is $49. Node.
Scott Tolinski
That don't don't don't act like that's a big hit. That's not a big hit. You could lost 30 points, so you're at negative 30 points here. And is Scott and Wes available? I'm gonna go ahead and say
Wes Bos
yes to both.
Scott Tolinski
And both are available. So you get an additional 20 points, which means you come out negative 10. So the total at the end of round 1 is looking very similar to last time. Negative 126 to negative 10. I'm really bad with these prices. That's definitely gonna be my,
Wes Bos
Achilles' heel here. I've got a next one for you. It is dotkoeln.
Scott Tolinski
That is going to be from a business? Yes.
Scott Tolinski
Okay.
Scott Tolinski
So
Wes Bos
what type of business is colon? I saw this one, and I was like, what could that possibly be? It's actually not pronounced colon.
Scott Tolinski
It's going to be for, coconut trees.
Wes Bos
Close, but not at all. Dot cologne.
Wes Bos
So it JS a TLD friends.
Wes Bos
Made for businesses of the Cologne community as well as residents of the city itself. So Cologne is a city in Germany, and I guess that's how they spell it in German. That was a good one. That was rough. That was a rough the r u f f rough.
Wes Bos
I got even rougher one coming for you.
Scott Tolinski
No. Okay. So pricing here pricing on this one, I'm gonna go with $49 again.
Wes Bos
That was pretty close. 29.
Scott Tolinski
Okay. Okay.
Scott Tolinski
Okay. So I can do some math here. 49 by 29, obviously.
Wes Bos
Minus 20 points.
Scott Tolinski
So I'm currently at negative 46 points. Well, I'm gonna say Wes and Scott are available, both of them. They are. Ding ding.
Scott Tolinski
I have survived this round with no change in points, so I'm still at negative 126. That's fantastic. I'm very happy about that. Okay. Well, I have a fun one for you. How about this 1? Good luck.
Round 2 ends, Wes still in the lead
Scott Tolinski
Dotc0.ke.
Scott Tolinski
Coke.
Wes Bos
K. I'm going to say this is a country.
Wes Bos
This is a country. You're trying to throw me that it's Coke. It's not. It's, I'm gonna say it's Kenya. I see.
Scott Tolinski
Wes. It's Kenya.
Wes Bos
Yes.
Scott Tolinski
Dang. Gotcha. How'd you know this was Kenya?
Wes Bos
Because the Kenya is, like, one of the only countries that starts with k e, and I know there's a lot of countries that don't have a dot whatever. They have a dot c o dot their their name. Like, toadotjp is Japan.
Wes Bos
Mhmm.
Wes Bos
Oh, he is salty, folks. Salty. How much does it cost to register a SEO? I'm gonna go with, $39.
Scott Tolinski
54.
Scott Tolinski
Woah. That's pretty close. That's not bad. Yeah. That's not bad. That's a win in my books. That's the closest we've been. That's that's only negative fifteen points for you.
Wes Bos
Is Scott and Wes available? I'm gonna say Scott is not and Wes is.
Scott Tolinski
You're gonna even out there. Big old whopping 0 on those because they're both available. So you have lost 5 points this round, which means you are Kenyans named Scott. Yes. Apparently. Yeah. So the current point total is negative 126 to negative 15. Wes, you're basically hanging tight, treading water, and I am plundering here, although last trend was was decently okay for me. Okay. So let's get into the next Node. Wes, what do you got for me? Dottr.
Round 3 begins
Scott Tolinski
T r is going to be a country.
Scott Tolinski
Yep. So that's 55 points from me. Now I gotta keep these 5 points. That's t r.
Scott Tolinski
Man, my, memory this morning is just not going really great. I'm scanning the globe in my brain, in my visual brain space. I'm seeing the countries and projecting the map in onto a a a sphere instead of onto a plane.
Scott Tolinski
Is it for Trinidad?
Wes Bos
No.
Wes Bos
Turkey.
Scott Tolinski
Oh, that Trinidad was an okay guess. What is their TLD? Dottt, I think. Trinidad and Tobago. Yeah. It's dottt. I had I had a concern that Tobago had a part of this.
Scott Tolinski
How much does it cost to red shirt? They go with my, my good old friend, $49.
Scott Tolinski
Nailed it.
Scott Tolinski
Is it really? Yeah.
Scott Tolinski
Cool. Hey. 0 album, that's the first one that you Node. Yeah. Heck yeah. Nailed it. But there should be bonus points if you get it, like, exactly. Next time, we'll do that. We should just wipe out my negative 126. That's what we should.
Wes Bos
Is Scott dot t r available? Scott dot t r.
Scott Tolinski
I would say Scott is not available. Wes is available.
Wes Bos
Even now, they're both not available. Both not available.
Scott Tolinski
Mark. Yeah. Okay. So I have, ended this round with a big old zeros on the board. Negative 126.
Round 3 ends, Wes still leading
Scott Tolinski
That was a a good round for me. Did not lose any more points. Okay. Wes, I have for you dot I s t.
Round 4 begins
Wes Bos
Dot I s t.
Wes Bos
Oh, international space travel, Maybe.
Wes Bos
I'm gonna say it's a business, not a country.
Wes Bos
Woah. It's a country? Istanbul.
Scott Tolinski
It is Istanbul.
Scott Tolinski
Woah.
Scott Tolinski
It was just actually a city. Right? Istanbul. Yeah. So
Wes Bos
that was interesting because that that's a new one. Like, that's not I've been around for a while, but it is a geographical one.
Wes Bos
The Scott cologne could be either there because it it was made for business purposes, but it also is geographical.
Wes Bos
Oh.
Wes Bos
But, you you you got points for that. I'll give it to you. Alright. How much does it cost to register to IST? I'm going to go with
Scott Tolinski
$29.
Scott Tolinski
19.
Scott Tolinski
Oh.
Scott Tolinski
So negative 10 there.
Wes Bos
Is Scott available? I'm gonna say Scott is not and Wes is because it's kinda cool, ist. Yeah. That is kind of a cool Yeah. Scott.
Scott Tolinski
They are both available.
Scott Tolinski
Wow. Scottist. Get it. Yeah. I know. Right? Okay. So the you have rounded up that round with a a negative 10. So you were if we play this game for, like, 20 plus rounds, I might actually come out on top. The current score is negative 126 to negative 25. So doing pretty good, Wes.
Round 4 ends, Wes still ahead
Wes Bos
I have got a good one for you. Oh, no. This might be a little bit out of bounds, but I'm going for it. There's no rules against it.
Round 5 begins
Scott Tolinski
Out of bounds.
Wes Bos
Dotxndashdash45q11c.
Wes Bos
Xndashdash 45q11c.
Scott Tolinski
It is a business? Correct.
Scott Tolinski
K.
Scott Tolinski
Is it like a debugging type of a top level domain, like an actual, technical use for this top level domain? No. There's not nothing technical about it. Nothing technical about it. It just exists.
Wes Bos
Companies domain. Okay. I can pronounce it for you if you want.
Scott Tolinski
Yeah.
Wes Bos
Scott Bagua.
Scott Tolinski
Seems like it's a Chinese thing.
Wes Bos
Yeah. Okay. I'll give you that. Okay.
Wes Bos
What do you mean, like, to get points for it? I'll give you let's give give them 5 points for knowing it's a Chinese domain name. K? Because like, I think we both know right now. It's a that's the ASCII representation of a Chinese character domain name. The okay. So that's really interesting.
Scott Tolinski
ASCII characters. Okay. So, Bagua, what's it what's it for, though? So Bagua converts to gossip in Chinese. Oh, man. There's no way I would ever know Bagua.
Scott Tolinski
They don't I watched a lot of Chinese films, and they don't ever, talk about gossip that much. So okay. So next question JS, how much does it cost? Is it an it's for gossip? Cost of money then, I'm gonna say it's $29.
Scott Tolinski
It's, like, a100000.
Wes Bos
324.90.
Wes Bos
Node on.
Wes Bos
324.
Scott Tolinski
Oh,
Wes Bos
Wes. Is Scott dot Bagua available? Yes.
Wes Bos
And what about Wes? Yes.
Wes Bos
They're both available. So if you got 700 boxes, you can get them up.
Scott Tolinski
Congratulations to me.
Scott Tolinski
I got I got I got 20 points minus, 20 plus points minus a hun 295 points.
Scott Tolinski
No sense because if you screw up Node price, you're shot. You're totally shot. We talked about fixing this at the end of last time, and, of course, the benefactor of this all did not want to listen to that. So, let's see how many points I actually have right now. It is, 20 minus 295 minus 126.
Scott Tolinski
Oh, come on. I did so well.
Scott Tolinski
Negative 401 points, so that's great. Congratulations to me. Alright. Well, try nail me a Scott. No. No. I'm not gonna have any bag wise here. Okay? It's not gonna happen.
Scott Tolinski
It is dotreit.
Round 5 ends, Scott makes a comeback
Wes Bos
Oh, Real Estate Investment Trust. That's a business that's, dedicated to real estate, and it's going to cost
Final round begins
Scott Tolinski
So you okay. Well, you didn't even wait for me to say yes. Okay. Well, I know. Okay. Go ahead. Tell me if I'm right. You are.
Scott Tolinski
You are right, sir.
Wes Bos
Okay. How much does it cost to get a REIT? I'm gonna say $39.
Wes Bos
For Scott dot REIT. Is that true? I got it? No.
Scott Tolinski
Oh. Scott dot REIT Bos $1,499.
Wes Bos
Node way.
Scott Tolinski
You are now negative 1460 here.
Scott Tolinski
No.
Scott Tolinski
Getting down to Bagua level here. Wow.
Wes Bos
I was so cocky because I knew it. Mhmm.
Wes Bos
Mhmm. $1,000.
Wes Bos
And Wes is is available. Yes. Give me my 10 points there. And so is Scott.reit.
Scott Tolinski
So, yes, they're both available.
Wes Bos
Oh. You rounded up that round because
Scott Tolinski
you finished that round at negative fourteen forty plus negative 126 is oh, no. You don't have negative 126. That's me, 25.
Scott Tolinski
So you finished that round with negative 1465.
Scott Tolinski
No.
Scott Tolinski
Ruh row. Big ruh row.
Scott Tolinski
I lost the game? Oh, looks like the the scoreboard. Yes. Unfortunately, Wes, you have lost the game on the very last round of the game.
Wes Bos
Man, that was that was, like, like, a overtime shootout where everyone thought it was fine. I had a huge lead. Even halfway through, I knew what REIT was and the price. Are you sure it's $1,000?
Game concludes, Scott wins in dramatic comeback
Scott Tolinski
Type it in. Give it do do a verification check if you like.
Wes Bos
$100.
Wes Bos
Wow.
Scott Tolinski
So sorry.
Scott Tolinski
So sorry about that one. I I was I was feeling charitable. I had a 1 all nice one lined up for you, and then, you went bagua on me, so I had to go, bust out my reed my my back pocket. I thought for sure bagua would would come and kill it. Yep. Alright. Wes the most part, dead. That was good. So, if you like that, let us know. Shoot us a tweet at syntax f m. Hopefully, you learned a few new TLDs today. Anything else to add? No. That was a lot of fun, and, definitely, I think we both have sort of rough mornings. This was a a nice little nice little kickoff to the day, so thanks thanks, Wes. I had a lot of fun. Beautiful. Alright. I'll catch you later. Later.
Wes Bos
Peace.
